Under the Nova Scotia Physician Stream, part of the Nova Scotia Nominee Program (NSNP), the government of Nova Scotia aims to address medical labour shortages by assisting Nova Scotia’s health institutions in hiring highly qualified international doctors

Job Offer | – Have a job offer from either the IWK Health Centre or the Nova Scotia Health Authority (NSHA)
o National Occupational Classification (NOC) codes 31100 (specialists in clinical and laboratory medicine o National Occupational Classification (NOC) codes 31101 (specialists in surgery o National Occupational Classification (NOC) codes 31102 (general practitioner and family physicians). |
Level of Education | – Have a valid Educational Credential Assessment from the Medical Council of Canada, or
– Have a proof that they meet the required criteria to obtain a license to practice medicine in Nova Scotia from the College of Physician and Surgeons of Nova Scotia. |
Work Experience | Not specifically required |
Language Proficiency | – Have proof that they are able to practice medicine either English or French. |
Connection to Province | – Need not require any specific connection to the province.
– Promise to live and work in Nova Scotia for at least 2 years. – Have proof of immigration status in the country where they are currently living, including Canada. |
Application Procedure
- Applications are accepted year-round.
- Processed based on the order received.
- Apply directly to Nova Scotia Nominee Program via email.
- Successful applicants receive a provincial nomination.
- Apply for Canadian permanent residence with the provincial nomination.
- Submit a hard copy application to IRCC within six months of nomination.
- Issued to nominees, allowing them to apply for a temporary work permit.
- Paper-based PNP applications typically take around 18 months.
